New ‘Contraception’ care map published on Map of Medicine

The new ‘Contraception’ care map is now available on the Map of Medicine. As well as highlighting the importance of individualising contraception and respecting patient choice, the care map covers:

  • the full range of contraceptive methods available to prevent conception or reduce fertility
  • considerations for both male and female sterilisation procedures
  • methods of emergency contraception and indications for use

Incorporating and expanding the scopes of the previous ‘Emergency contraception’ and ‘Female contraception’ care maps, the new care map provides a comprehensive resource for GPs and family planning healthcare professionals.

Expert input into the content came from GP Dr Azhar Saleem, who commented:

‘This is a very well thought out, well researched and well organised care map, I am impressed with the content'.

Issues around patients under age 16 years and women with learning disabilities are specifically addressed, based on national recommendations. The critically-appraised evidence base for the care map incorporates guidance from the Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care (FFPRHC), and from the Royal Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), including recently updated information on drug interactions with hormonal contraception.
